FiresciencestudentsandfacultywerejoinedbytheSaultSte.Mariecityfiredepartmentforalldaytraining.Crewspracticed”positivepressureattack”techniquesthatblowheatoutwindowsandallowfirefighterstowalkintoafirewithouttakingabeating.Themethodalsoincreasessafetyfortrappedpeople.TheSaultfiredepartment,alongwithLSSUfiresciencefaculty,chippedintohelpcoverRescueResources’visit.
LSSU’sfiresciencestudentsparticipatedinsuchtraininginarecentspecialclass.Theonedayclassemphasizedpracticalworkandisanexampleofmostrecentdevelopmentsandresearchinsuppressingfireinresidentialtypebuildings.
TheclasswastaughtbyGrandRapidsFireDepartmentDeputyChiefKevinSehlmeyer. Heandhisinstructionalteamprovidedthetrainingwhichdemonstratedhowtheuseofspeciallydesignedfanscanbeusedinconjunctionwithinitialfireattack. ThispracticalinstructioncombineswiththetheoryandresearchLSSUstudentsstudyintheirclassroomwork.

WorkingthisexerciseareLSSUHealthCentermedicaldirectorDr.TimothyTetzlaff(ingreen);leadsimulationspecialistJudyHering(foreground);andLSSUEMSstudentsandalumni.AnimportantbenefitoftheCenterisitsabilitytopresentstudentsthathavelife-threateningconditions.TheparamedicineprogramatLSSUhasbeencollaboratingwiththeSimulationCentertoprovideconstantlychangingconditionsthatrequiresEMSstudentstoreactjustastheywouldonrealcalls.Asoursimulationprogramexpands,sowilltheabilitytomeettheneedsofourpre-hospitalhealthcarestudents.
