A Bill of Student Rights

Lake Superior State University

Article I

Preamble

In order to ensure the fair treatment of all members of the Student Assembly and to secure a productive environment in which to advance the pursuit of knowledge, we, the students of Lake Superior State University, claim the rights listed below. It is the responsibility of all members of the University community, including administration, faculty, staff and students, to uphold these rights. The enumeration of the following rights does not limit or nullify other rights held by students.

Article II

Student Rights

1. Information. The student has the right to accurate and current information about the requirements for maintaining acceptable academic standing, as determined by University policy.

2. Privacy. The student has a right to reasonable privacy and confidentiality with regards to his or her records, including academic and personal information.

3. Graduation Requirements. The student has the right to clearly stated graduation requirements. Changes in those requirements shall not be applied retroactively (excepting professional certification or other requirements imposed from outside the University).

4. University Policy. Students have the right to actively participate in the formation of University policy affecting student affairs.

5. Syllabus. The student has the right to a syllabus for each class in which he or she is enrolled. The syllabus shall accurately state objectives that will govern the progression of the course throughout the semester.

6. Faculty Attendance. The student has the right to expect faculty attendance to all classes as outlined in the course schedule. In the event that faculty attendance to class is not possible, the student has the right to expect the faculty member to make a noticeable effort to compensate for lost class time.

7. Evaluation. The student has the right to be evaluated fairly based solely upon his or her academic performance as it relates to course objectives stated on the syllabus.

8. Grade Appeals. The student has the right to challenge a course grade. Information regarding the appeals process shall be readily available to students.

9. Student Government. Students have the right to be represented by a democratic student government.

10. Clubs and Organizations. Students have the right to form and participate in clubs and organizations, which shall be given reasonable access to University facilities.

11. Demonstration. Students have the right to demonstrate on campus, so long as they comply with University policy.

12. Disciplinary Appeals. Students have the right to appeal disciplinary action imposed by the University. Information regarding the appeals process shall be readily available to students.

Article III

Ratification and Amendment

1. Ratification. This Bill of Student Rights shall become an official governing document of the Student Assembly and part of University policy with the approval of a majority of voting members of the Student Assembly and subject to the approval of the President of the University, in an election to take place April 6-13, 2006.

2. Amendment. This Bill of Student Rights may be amended by a two-thirds vote of Student Government, subject to the approval of the President of the University.

3. Revocation. This Bill of Student Rights may be revoked only by a referendum representing a quorum of twenty percent of the Student Assembly.

4. Severance. If any provision of this Bill of Student Rights is held to be in violation of federal, state, or local law, or in violation of a contract between the University and another party, that provision shall be severed from this Bill of Student Rights, the remainder of which shall remain in force.
