SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The LSSU Alumni Association is happy to announce the 2019 recipient of the Bud and Mary Mansfield Parent of the Year Award is Darlene McNichol of Richmond, MI, mother of Sarah McNichol, a senior majoring in Fisheries & Wildlife Management. Sarah nominated her mother with an essay she wrote on the theme, “Why my parent deserves to be the parent of the year.” A committee comprised of faculty and staff reviewed the nominations for Parent of the Year and selected Sarah’s essay as the winning entry.
Ms. McNichol was honored with an award presented by Dr. Rodney Hanley, LSSU President, during the annual Alumni Awards banquet on October 11 during Great Lake State Weekend. The Parent of the Year received free lodging in an area hotel October 11-12; a lovely, personalized award; and complimentary tickets to all Great Lake State Weekend activities, courtesy of the LSSU Alumni Association. Congratulations to Sarah and her mother!
The award is named in honor of Bud and Mary Mansfield. Bud was a long-time businessman and director of the Sault Area Chamber of Commerce. Eight of the Mansfield’s children attended Lake State. Most of their sons and daughters-in-law are LSSU alumni, as well. Bud was a Soo Tech alumnus and a member of the first class of the Sault Branch of Michigan Tech in 1946.
The Mansfield Parent of the Year contest is part of Great Lake State Weekend. GLSW is LSSU’s homecoming, with many events for students during the week and activities for alumni, students, families, faculty and staff, and all Laker fans during the weekend.
