SaultSte.Marie,MI— LakeSuperiorStateUniversityhasresumedflyingtheAmericanflagatitssecondsite,nowthatadjustmentstothepolehavebeenmade.

Theflagpoleinquestion,adjacenttotheCentralHeatingPlant,istechnicallyacelltowerthat,atthetop,canflyaflag.Thestructure,spanning110feettall,isthelargerofLSSU’stwolocationsthatflyflags.Theother,anactualflagpoleinthemiddleofPlegerCommons,agrassyexpanseatthecenterofcampus,hasbeenflyingcontinuously.TheflagthatLSSUfliesonthecelltowerstanchionmeasures38feetx20feet.TheflagonthesmallerPlegerCommonsflagpoleis8feetx5feet;thatpolereaches56feethigh.

“AsaU.S.Armyveteran,asaformerEagleScouttroopleader,andasthesonofamilitaryman,it’swithprideandreliefthatIcanfinallydeclare:LakeSuperiorStateUniversityisagainflyingtheU.S.flagonbothofitsflagpoles,”saidLSSUPresidentRodneyS.Hanley.“OurcampusmakesapointtodoourcivicdutyandupholdAmericanpatriotism.”

Thecelltowerdatesto2006andisleasedtoavendor.Thecurrentmerchantwantedtoexpandservicestocustomersand,therefore,hadtomodifyitsleaseandupgradeitsequipment.NegotiationsbeganinMarch2019andconcludedamonthlater.Finalizingtheredesignandsecuringthetechnologytookseveralmonths,asdidsolvingengineeringsnafusandflag-flyingproblemsalongtheway.Plus,thelonganddangerouswinterseasonintheUpperPeninsulapreventedworkersfromscalingthepostthen.Oneofthefixesinvolvedincreasingthediameterofthetop324inchesofthepillarfrom24inchesto42inchestoallowtheflagtofly.
