The Arts Center at Lake Superior State University presents the Tannahill Weavers, bringing authentic Celtic music straight from Scotland on October 3 at 7:00 p.m.
The new Arts Center Director Thomas Meachem says, “I could not be more thrilled that the first concert of our “Celebrating 15 Years” 2019-20 season will be the Tannahill Weavers. They perform traditional Scottish melodies with lively modern rhythms that span an eclectic Celtic repertoire. As a Scot myself, I am honored to welcome the Tannahill Weavers to our stage to kick off our season with a fun, foot-stomping evening of Celtic revelry.”
2019 marks the Tannahill Weavers fifty-first year and they are proud to be one of Scotland’s premier traditional bands. Their diverse musical repertoire including, “fire-driven instrumentals, topical songs, and original ballads and lullabies” keep the Tannahill Weavers exciting and fresh for modern audiences.
Originating in Paisley, Scotland, the group got their name from the town’s reputation for weavers and their local poet laureate, Robert Tannahill. Founded by Roy Gullane and Phil Smillie, the globally known group shot to stardom when they became the first professional Scottish folk group to successfully incorporate full-size highland bagpipes in their performances. Gullane and Smillie breathe new life into traditional songs and enrapture their audiences with their musical prowess.
According to the Winnipeg Free Press, “The Tannahill Weavers – properly harnessed – could probably power an entire city for a year on the strength of last night’s concert alone. The music may be old time Celtic, but the drive and enthusiasm are akin to straight ahead rock and roll.”
The Tannahill Weavers were inducted into the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame in 2011 and recently released their fifty-year anniversary album in 2018, in partnership with Compass Records, titled Orach (which means Golden in Gaelic). And anyone who has heard them play cannot deny that their special blend of harmonies, instruments, and vocals is golden. From jigs to ballads, the Tannahill Weavers are sure to please the whole family.

The Tannahill Weavers will take the Arts Center Stage at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 3, 2019. Free parking is available in Lot K, in front of the Arts Center, and Lot E, behind the Cisler Center. The Arts Center is wheelchair accessible. Admission is $27 for adults, $23 for seniors, $10 for children 17 and under, and free for LSSU students.
