Facility Rentals And Reservations

From birthday parties to group meetings to large scale events. The Norris Events Center offers a number of reversible rooms and facilities for events of all sizes and types.

Conference Rooms

The Blue Liner Room is used by the Division I Laker Hockey Support group and can be utilized for small group meetings and conferences.

Classrooms

The James Norris Events Center features a number of classrooms spaces. All classrooms are equipped with a computer, projector and mounted dry erase board.

Natatorium

The Norris Center Natatorium consists of two separate pools. The dive pool ranges from 11.5 feet deep to 15 feet deep. The 25 meter lap pool is 4 feet deep at both ends and 8 feet deep in the middle and is equipped for handicap access. The natatorium also has adjacent seating for 420 spectators.

Recreational And Sport Court

The 30 by 50 foot dance studio is used for the teaching of ballet, modern dance, folk dance, floor exercises, and co-educational dance activities. It is equipped with ballet handrails, wall mirrors, and sound system.

The James Norris Events Center features two racquetball courts for use. The courts may also be set-up for wallyball or badminton.

The Student Activity Center includes 4 multi-use courts separated by curtains, an indoor track and a fitness center. Students and community members are welcomed to enjoy what this facility has to offer. The LSSU track, and Tennis teams use the facility regularly. Many student intramural sports are also housed here. Beyond student and student athlete use, exercise science students are helping community members through fitness programs that they are designing. There are many groups that sign up for use of the center as well: local law enforcement, Special Olympics, church groups, schools, local fundraisers, local government agencies, local businesses, local care facilities, local teams all have an agreement and use the facility.

Arenas

This multi-purpose gymnasium encompasses 19,500 square feet and can be used for basketball, badminton, volleyball, and tennis. The bleachers which can provide seating for 2,500 spectators can also be rolled back to provide additional space. For special events, the gym has a foldaway platform and additional seating can be set up to accommodate 4,000 spectators.

Facility Rental Policies

  • There is no facility rental charge to LSSU Departments for facility usage as long as the activity is university related (business meetings, class, etc).
  • LSSU Departments requesting space for non-university related activities or space outside normal operational hours will be assessed the regular facility rental rate.
  • Regardless of usage type, set-up and staffing fees, when applicable, will be charged to the department.
  • There is no facility rental charge for LSSU Registered Student Organizations/Club Sports for approved requests that are part of the organization’s/club’s normal activity (practice, meeting, etc) for organization/club members. LSSU Registered Student Organizations are allowed to reserve up to 2 hours weekly for practices & games during non-prime rental hours; all Student Organization reservations are subject to adjustment to meet the needs of paying customers & reservations if necessary
  • Special Events such as tournaments and conferences or any other activity that invites non club members will be treated as ‘non-related’ events and will be assessed the regular facility rental rates.
  • Regardless of usage type, set-up and staffing fees, when applicable, will be charged to the Student Organization/Club Sport.
  • There will be a discount of facility rental charge for current LSSU Students/Faculty/Staff for approved requests that are for personal use and not associated with Registered Student Organizations/Club Sports, department, or academic purposes. The LSSU community rate does not apply to any organized team use or any personal profiting.
  • LSSU Students/Faculty/Staff renting facility for non LSSU or external groups should see External Group policy.

External Groups

  • Non-University groups wishing to use an area of the facility may request to do so pending space availability. Appropriate rental rates apply.
  • External Groups must have general liability insurance and/or excess umbrella insurance in an amount totaling no less than $1,000,000 per claim. The Certificate of Insurance should name ‘Lake Superior State University’ as additionally insured on
    the policy. A certificate of insurance and policy endorsement will be provided to LSSU prior to any occurrence of training or instruction. Such insurance will be primary with LSSU’s insurance being non-contributory.
  • External Groups must also have workers compensation insurance at the statutory amount and $1,000,000 of employer’s liability insurance. The Certificate of Insurance should name ‘Lake Superior State University’ as a certificate holder.

Training and Instructing

  • Trainers or instructors not affiliated with Lake Superior State University wishing to use an area of the facility may request to do so pending space availability and approval by University Recreation. Appropriate rental rates may apply.
  • External trainers or instructors must have general liability insurance and/or excess umbrella insurance in an amount totaling no less than $1,000,000 per claim. The Certificate of Insurance should name ‘Lake Superior State University’ as additionally
    insured on the policy. A certificate of insurance and policy endorsement will be provided to LSSU prior to any occurrence of training or instruction. Such insurance will be primary with LSSU’s insurance being non-contributory.
  • Setup/Tear-down fees may apply for any activity that requires a setup beyond standard room setup (see rate sheet).
  • Any approved request for a full day or multiple day event will require an event preparation meeting with a University Recreation Professional Staff Member.
  • If requesting use of all facilities of a particular nature (i.e. all four SAC courts) for an entire day(s), provisions will need to be made to make one portion of the facility available for recreational use for a 2 hour time block during the day(s). This 2 hour block of time will be designated by University Recreation staff based on recreational use patterns.

These are the general guidelines; specifics will be laid out in the confirmation or rental agreement.

  • Estimated facility charges under $50
    • Non-Refundable pre-payment of estimated facility charges due at receipt of confirmation to hold reservation.
  • Estimated facility charges under $500
    • Non-Refundable Reservation Deposit of $50 due at receipt of confirmation to hold reservation.
    • Deposit of 50% of Estimated Facility Charges due 1 month prior to reservation.
  • Estimated facility charges $500+
    • Non-Refundable Reservation Deposit of 10% of Estimated Facility Charges due at receipt of confirmation to hold reservation.
    • Deposit of 50% of Estimated Facility Charges due 1 month prior to reservation.
  • Cancellations can occur up to 1 month prior to the reservation without any additional penalty beyond the non-refundable reservation deposit.
  • Cancellations made between 15-30 days prior to the event will be eligible for a 50% refund of the 50% deposit paid.
  • Cancellations made between 8 – 14 days prior to the reservation will not be eligible for a refund of deposits/pre-payments.
  • Cancellations made between 2-7 days prior to the reservation will be charged full estimated facility charges that were indicated in the confirmation.
  • Cancellations day of or no-shows will be charged all estimated charges (facility, staffing, setup, teardown, etc) that were indicated in the confirmation.

Staffing needs are determined by the Professional Staff based on the activity. General guidelines to assist in planning are as follows:

  • Events using only one space during normal operational hours and having under 75 participants do not require any additional staff unless requested by the organization reserving the space.
  • Events using only one space outside of normal operational hours and having under 150 participants will require 1 Building Monitor.
  • Events using more than one space during normal operational hours will require 1 Building Monitor per 75 participants or fraction thereof.
  • Events using more than one space outside of normal operational hours will require 1 Building Monitor and 1 Building Manager.
  • Norris Guest Information desk is above and beyond the staffing requirements above.
  • Aquatic Center usage requires a minimum of 2 lifeguards.
  • Climbing Wall usage requires a minimum of 2 climbing wall attendants.
