Central Savings Bank (CSB) established a scholarship to assist Lake Superior State University students studying finance and economics or accounting in 1990. The goal of this scholarship program is to provide talented local students an opportunity to work and stay within the local community.

Candidates for the scholarship must maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average after four or more semesters of study. Preference is given to students who are graduates of an Eastern Upper Peninsula (EUP) or Algoma District of Ontario high school and have an interest in seeking full-time employment within the field of banking or finance and plan to stay in the area.

This year’s recipient is Emily Chartrand, a junior from Brimley, Mich. Chartrand is majoring in accounting with a minor in general business. She is a first-generation college student, and is excited to be a role model to her younger family members. Emily is the secretary of the accounting club at LSSU. She hopes to obtain credentials for both a Certified Management Accountant and Certified Public Accountant within the next five years.

Meister joined CSB in 1973 after graduating from LSSU with a bachelor’s degree in business administration-accounting. He was awarded the first LSSU Outstanding Business Alumnus award in 2001.

Other members of the Central Savings Bank staff were awarded the CSB Scholarship including President Mark Savoie and Assistant VP and Loan Officer Erin Albrecht. Savoie was the 1992 scholarship recipient and Albrecht received the CSB Scholarship award in 2009.
