Determinationoflead(Pb),barium(Ba),andantimony(Sb)ingunshotresiduebythinfilmhydridegenerationmicrowaveplasmaatomicemissionspectroscopy(MP-AES)
Abstract:Themicrowaveplasmaatomicemissionspectroscopy(MP-AES)isarelativelynewanalyticaltechniquethathasonlyrecentlybecomecommerciallyavailablefromAgilentTechnologiesasthe4000seriesMP-AES.Forthiswork,anAgilent4200MP-AESwasusedtodeterminePb,Ba,andSbingunshotresidue.The4200MP-AESusesanitrogenplasmawithatemperatureof~5000Ktoproduceatomicemissionsfrom178-780nm.Gunshotresiduesampleswerecollectedusingcottonswabsmoistenedwith5%HNO3.Pb,Ba,andSbweresubsequentlyextractedwith1%HCl,priortoanalysis.ToimprovethesensitivityofSb,athinfilmhydridegeneratorwasutilizedinadditiontoaconventionalnebulizertosimultaneouslyintroducePbandBatotheplasmaasaerosols,andSbasSbH3Â followingreductiontoSb3+Â byL-CysteineandreactionwithNaBH4.Thinfilmhydridegenerationincreasedsensitivitybyafactorof>10xcomparedtoconventionalnebulization,allowingdetectionlimitsoflessthan1x10-6g,5×10-8g,and1x10-6gforPb,Ba,andSbrespectively,whichissufficienttoconfirmthepresenceofgunshotresideinsingleshottestsamples.
