The LSSU Foundation’s Annual Giving Committee is pleased to announce this year’s Classic Circle inductee is Dr. Shane Woolever, orthopedic surgeon at War Memorial Hospital.  The induction is part of the 30th Lake State Golf Classic at Wild Bluff Golf Course in Brimley, Michigan on Friday, June 14th.

The Classic Circle is a recent tradition, first awarded in 2016, to recognize people or entities that have consistently supported the Lake State Golf Classic, Fund for LSSU, Laker Club or philanthropic initiatives in support of Lake Superior State University.  Recipients exhibit the qualities of a “true Laker” with character, citizenship, determination and philanthropy.

Past recipients include Gary “Mac” McClellan, Gil Somes, the Walt North Family, and last year, Rick and Susan Fitzpatrick of Pingatore Cleaners, Inc.

Dr. Shane Woolever was honored by the LSSU Alumni Association in 2008 with the Donald and Catherine Finlayson Award. It is presented to a friend of the University in recognition of their contributions to profession, community, and as an advocate of Lake Superior State University through their time and/or resources.

Woolever, a gifted orthopedic surgeon, founded Greater Peninsula Orthopedics of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan in 2001, and now has an office in War Memorial Hospital’s Medical Building. He served as Director of Adult Joint Reconstruction and Chairman of the Operating Room Operations Committee at War Memorial Hospital 2001-03.

Greater Peninsula Orthopedics was the Lake State Golf Classic Title Sponsor for eight consecutive years.  Dr. Woolever has been a member of the Laker Club and Laker Loft Holder for many years. He has also volunteered as team physician for Laker Athletics, and has assisted many Laker student-athletes in recovering from their injuries.

“Our Annual Giving Committee has made another excellent selection with Dr. Woolever being inducted this year,” said Tom Coates, Executive Director – LSSU Foundation. “We are so fortunate to have such a talented surgeon in the Sault and a strong advocate of LSSU and our student-athletes.”

The Classic Circle induction presentation will occur during the outing on Friday, June 14th at Wild Bluff Golf Course.  LSSU President Rod Hanley will preside over his second presentation.“Last year was my first Lake State Classic and a highlight for me was recognizing the contributions made by Rick and Sue Fitzpatrick,” stated President Hanley. “I have met Dr. Woolever in his Laker Loft at a hockey game this past season and I look forward to honoring him at the outing this year.”
