Lake Superior State University alum Dan Laur (’76) pauses from fishing for Steelhead and Atlantic salmon in the St. Mary’s rapids – which forms an international boundary between Michigan and Ontario – to present a check to LSSU Foundation Executive Director Tom Coates (right) and LSSU Aquatic Research Laboratory (ARL) Manager Roger Greil. Laur made the $15,000 gift on May 20 to the LSSU Center for Freshwater Research and Education (CFRE). The $11.8 million facility, slated for completion in 2021, will include an improved hatchery facility as well as expanded research and classroom space, state-of-the-art research and fish disease testing labs, a community visitor’s center and K-12 discovery area, and offices for regional partners. It will enable LSSU to increase partnerships within the university, the twin-Sault communities, and upper Great Lakes region. Laur, who received the LSSU Alumni Association’s Outstanding Alumnus award in 2012, is president and owner of Laur Silicone, Inc., of Beaverton, Mich. The avid angler has fished all over North America, but prefers the pursuit of Atlantic salmon that have been raised and released into the St. Mary’s by LSSU for more than 40 years.
