SAULT STE. MAIRE, Mich. — Poet Lynn Domina visits Lake Superior State University on Tuesday, Nov. 14, for an afternoon master class and evening reception, reading, and book signing. All events are free and open to the public.
The master class is at 3 p.m. in room 217 of the Arts Center and is titled “The Use and Abuse of the Line in Free Verse Poetry.” The evening reading, reception, and book signing is 7-9 p.m. in the Kenneth L. Shouldice Library. Refreshments and light hors d’oeuvres will be offered.
Lynn Domina is the author of two collections of poetry, Corporal Works, which won the Intro Series Prize from Four Way Books, and Framed in Silence, published as part of the Editor’s Select Poetry Series from Main Street Rag. She is also the editor of a collection of essays, Poets on the Psalms. Domina ‘s poetry appears in many periodicals, including The Southern Review, The Gettysburg Review, Prairie Schooner, Christianity & Literature, The Louisville Review, and New Letters. Her scholarly work includes three reference books, Understanding A Raisin in the Sun, Understanding Ceremony, and the recently published The Harlem Renaissance: A Historical Exploration of Literature. She is currently working on an annotated edition of Nella Larsen’s novel, Passing.
Domina grew up in Saginaw, Michigan. She earned a bachelor of arts in English from Michigan State University, a master’s of Fine Arts in creative writing/poetry from the University of Alabama, and a Ph.D. in English from Stony Brook University. She recently completed a Master of Divinity degree (M.Div.) at the Earlham School of Religion. After many years in the western Catskill Mountains, Lynn now lives with her family in Marquette, Mich.
Domina’s visit is part of the LSSU Visiting Writer Series, in conjunction with the LSSU Library Writers Series to bring highly acclaimed authors and poets to campus for a shared literary experience with the community. The public will have the opportunity to hear Domina read her work, and answer questions about her writing process and publishing experience. Domina will also sign copies of her books that will be available for purchase.
LSSU offers both an undergraduate major and minor in creative writing. The program encourages innovation and experimentation as students develop their voices. Students complete coursework in prose, poetry, and performance writing, and are given opportunities to get publishing experience before graduation.
